Not the Odalisque, acrylic and pastel, 24x18 inches, 2013
I saw on another writer’s site that she included a painting of her, and I thought it might be interesting to share this one. My still-thriving, 90-year-old mother, the artist Suzanne Benton, asked me to pose for her series Paintings in Proust in the manner of Grande Odalisque, an 1814 oil painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. She discovered just how unnatural the women’s poses were in those classic paintings when her models tried to reproduce them. This pose was twisted in a way that was hard to maintain! But I’m flattered that she finally painted me. :-)
